Positively Ugly series
In his Pop Symbolist Positively Ugly series, de Veyra paints fictional gentrified urban neighborhoods containing conscious as well as unwitting symbols of democracy, anti-democracy, or both. To the painter, the ultimate democracy in each of the neighborhoods also semiotically achieves a “positive” color disharmony that conflicts with the clean “corporate aesthetic fascism" of big money-deriving gentrifications.
